Wrestlers advance in sections

The No. 3 seeded Tri-City United boys wrestling team (18-5) earned their first victory Thursday on what they hope is the road to the state tournament.

Their Coach, Shaun Timmerman has high hopes, and the athletes have a strong work ethic to make it.

"We have a great shot. We just need to focus on our 'clean' technique and wrestle smart. We also have a lot of individuals who are looking at some great success at the end of the year,” he stated.

The team continues on their path after a decisive 54-17 victory over Waseca (11-2) in Montgomery.

Zach Balma (106), earned TCU its first victory after defeating Kaden John in a 16-4 major decision. The Bluejays responded with three wins in 113, 120 and 126 weight classes, keeping the contest tight with an 11-4 score.

However, the Titans were not to be outdone on the mat. They surged ahead with nine consecutive victories in weight classes 132 to 220. The wins came from five falls - Caleb Whipps (132), Cade O’Malley (145), Marco Reyes (160), Brody Run (170), and Jose Reyes (195).

Adam Fredrickson (152) won with a 3-2 decision, and Riley O’Malley scored points for TCU on a 16-1 technical fall.

Tegan Determan won by forfeit.

The final match of the night, the heavyweight 285 class, found Waseca earning its final points when Jacob Hertzog pinned TCU’s Robert Bastyr in 3:10.

Next action
Timmerman said the Titans next section match is against Hutchinson (No. 2 seed) on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Mankato West High School. Defeating Hutchinson would bring TCU to the final round of sections where the winner would advance to the state tournament.
