TCU ends regular winter sporting events

On Wednesday, March 3, TCU announced it is cancelling all remaining regular season sporting events for this winter.

In an email sent to parents, Activities Director Chad Johnson said it is because other schools have been cancelling contests with TCU due to its positive COVID-19 and/or exposure numbers.

“We have been offering our sports teams to play their regularly scheduled games for the past week.  Our opponents have cancelled the games out of safety and caution for their school,” he stated. “I have to be honest in saying I completely understand their position. I would most likely be making the decision for our students if we were on the other side.”

Johnson said the decision to cancel the remainder of the regular winter contests will allow the school to focus on getting the varsity teams ready for playoffs.

“We realize we have lost a few individuals already for the postseason.  But, by limiting pods to a smaller amount and no outside exposures we may be able to get the majority of our kids out to have a final playoff experience.” he said.

Junior high boys’ and girls’ basketball will still have practice Wednesday and Thursday, March 3 and 4 to finish their season and collect uniforms.

The high school teams (basketball, wrestling and dance) will still practice March 3 and 4.  Coaches will then limit the pod sizes to the section roster limits by Friday.

“This is NOT an easy decision and I am truly doing what is in the best interest of our varsity teams and our seniors,” he said.
