With steady hands and eyes on the flying targets, TCU alumnus Ben Sladek shot a perfect score at the Caribou Gun Club and Hunting Preserve’s 2019 High School Trap Championship event June 1-2.

Shooting against seven local teams, Belle Plaine, Cleveland, Jordan, Le Sueur–Henderson, Sibley East, St. Peter, TCU shooters took first place in the varsity and the junior varsity levels. This was a repeat success for the teams, as they placed the same last year.

In the individual competition however, Sladek shot the perfect score, breaking 100 out of 100 clays. That led to him to taking home the High Overall Average (HOA) Award.

The outcome for Sladek was sweeter than last year when he tied with a perfect score for first place with another shooter, but was bumped to second place after a shoot off to break the tie.

This year was different. During the competition, he knew the HOA was his.

“This year I wanted to run a perfect score again. About halfway through I just noticed I was pounding every target. It almost became hard for me to miss at that point. In my mind, I thought, ‘I’m going to run it today,’ ” he said.

The perfect score, though, wasn’t his first for the season. After weekly competitions, Sladek has a 24.50 average out of 25. And he has run three 50 straight out of 50 during the five weeks.

Behind Sladek at the Caribou competition, was fellow Titan, Andrew Trnka, who took third place with 94/100, and Chloe Trident who placed third in the girls’ division with 82/100.
