New priest for local parish

The local Catholic community, including Most Holy Redeemer Church in Montgomery, St. Canice Catholic Church in Kilkenny, and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Shieldsville, is under new leadership as of July 1.

Fr. Victor Valencia, who has led the parish for five years, has transferred to St. Jerome Church in Maplewood.

Fr. Tom Niehaus (pronounced knee-house), who has most recently served at St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie, has taken on the leadership role in the local Catholic community.

Fr. Niehaus was born in Ivanhoe, Minnesota, and is the youngest son of Melvin and Veronica (Saftig) Niehaus. He has three brothers Fr. Jonathan, David, and Fr. Mark, and two sisters Sr. M. Deanne and Rebecca.

He was ordained to the diaconate on October 4, 2007, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome by then Archbishop John Patrick Foley and to the priesthood on June 28, 2008, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona by Bishop Bernard Joseph Harrington.

Fr. Niehaus has served as a priest at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and St. Casimir Parish and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center, Winona, St. Casimir in Wells, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Easton, St. John the Baptist in Minnesota Lake, and St. Columbines in Blooming Prairie, as well as Sacred Heart in Hayfield and St. John Baptist de la Salle in Dodge Center.
