Homecoming Week is here

This week is Homecoming Week for the Tri-City United School District.

As is common during this week of celebrations, it is also a time for schools to welcome back former students and members and celebrate an organization’s existence. It is a long-standing tradition in many high schools, colleges, and churches in the United States and Canada.

This week has a lot of activities for alumni to partake in, like the volleyball game on Tuesday where people were encouraged to wear pink and purchase pink items to support Eileen Segna and her family in her fight against cancer. There were raffles, cookies, bandanas and silent auction items!

Friday is a big day for TCU alumni. During the day, the schools will hold their Homecoming Parades, and Friday night is the football game against Albert Lea. Those events always attract a lot of alumni from TCU.

But what about alumni from the previous Montgomery-Lonsdale and Le Center School Districts that consolidated to become TCU? When my daughter, Hannah, graduated from MLHS in 2012, her class was the last Redbird class before it transformed into TCU that fall.

She commented at her five-year reunion last year that they don’t really have “a school” to return to for Homecoming. Since the Class of 2012 graduated, and all those before it, the Montgomery and Le Center buildings and their configurations that make up TCU have changed — a lot.

It is not a bad thing. It’s just a sign that times change. It happened to the students from Sherman High School or when Montgomery High School became Montgomery-Lonsdale High School.

Does that mean they don’t support TCU? Absolutely not!

Support should be strong regardless of the name of the school. This is evident from the massive support the community shows to the students and staff of TCU. This shines every week at sporting events, through donations and the voter-approved building referendum last winter.

I did not graduate from a Minnesota school district. I am a Saint from St. Mary’s High School in Bismarck, N.D. I supported them, MLHS and now TCU. I know graduates from all over, with ties to local school districts, will be here this week to support TCU at Homecoming.

Welcome!
