Dr. Brahs retires after 40 years

Dr. Mark Brahs opened his dental office on First Street, Montgomery, on October 1, 1976. He had one customer that day, a lady with a broken tooth.

Local dentist Dr. Mark Brahs, who has provided dental care in Montgomery for 43 years, has hung up his tooth explorer tool and mouth mirror and is settling into retirement.

“I was fortunate to have a good career,” stated Brahs, who officially retired on May 30. “I’ve had the privilege of seeing patients as young as two years old, up to 103… I’ve seen some families for three generations, possibly four. I’m grateful for those who have put their trust in me over the years.”

Brahs grew up in Le Center, graduated from Le Center High School, went on to study Biology and Chemistry at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota's School of Dentistry in 1976.

Like many dental students, he was heavily recruited by rural communities in the Dakotas and western Minnesota, but he and his wife, Mary, wanted to make their home near family members and friends.

With that in mind, 25-year-old Brahs sought out a few of Montgomery's civic-minded businessmen in the winter of 1975 to inquire about opening a new dental office in town. Those men included: Glenn Malone, Larry Morgan, Sr., LeRoy Preble, Leonard Ouradnik, Don Westerman, and Jerry Herrmann.
