Avoiding the flu by driving thru

No time to get a flu shot? Drive up with ease and roll up that sleeve!

Getting a flu shot this year from Le Sueur County Public Health and Emergency Management was that easy on Monday, Oct. 19. Held at the Le Center Ambulance Hall, the adapted flu shot clinic was held as an easy way for people to get their annual flu shot, while staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This was also a way for public health to practice for COVID- 19 mass vaccinations. In the past, we scheduled indoor flu shot clinics in several communities and they were often crowded spaces,” said Cindy Shaughnessy, RN, PHN, Le Sueur County Public Health Director. “In order to decrease exposures to the public wanting flu shots, the drive-thru clinics offered a way for us to provide a safe, socially distanced flu shot. Participants wore masks and did not leave their cars.”

Public Health staff administered 250 flu shots with eight nurses (Kelly Hughes, Jennie Janovsky, Abbie McCabe, Angie Doerr, Juli Hartwig, Amber Karels, Abby Beer, Makayla Drazan), all in PPE gear, stationed on either side of four cars as they pulled into the Ambulance bay drive thru. With any vaccination, participants were then asked to wait outside for about five minutes in the event they experienced any adverse reactions
