New area code prompting changes in dialing

With 507 numbers expected to run out of numbers by early 2025, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved 924 as an additional area code for the current geographic region that covers the current 507 area code.

The new 924 area code is an overlay area code or an area code that covers the exact same region as another existing area code. This means that there will be no change to existing numbers within the 507 area code.

In preparation for the addition of the 924 area code, all customers located within the current 507 area code should prepare for 10-digit dialing.

Currently, local calls can be made with either seven or 10 digits, and all local calls will continue to be local.

Key information • Current telephone numbers, including current area code, will not change. • Users will need to dial the area code + telephone number for all local calls, including calls within the same area code. • Users will continue to dial 1 + area code + telephone number for all long distance calls. • What is a local call now will remain a local call. • The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay area code. Callers can still dial three digits to reach 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 711 and 811 where available.
