Lady Bucs win Gopher Conference Track and Field Championship

the WEM girls track and field team scored points in helping the Lady Bucs win the 2021 Gopher Conference Championship.

WEM had scoring performances by more than two dozen individuals in scoring 164 points to win the title Tuesday, May 25 at Hayfield.

Medford placed second with 108 points. Third through eighth went as follows: United South Central/Alden-Conger (93.5), NRHEG (82), Hayfield (81), Blooming Prairie (81), Maple River (50.5), and Faribault BA (30).

WEM won four individual events and a pair of relays to score 60 of their points. Senior Toryn Richards, who was voted the Gopher Conference Athlete of the Year, has yet to lose an event this spring.

Richards won the pole vault (9-feet), the high jump (5-feet, 4-inches) which tied her school record, and the 200-meter dash (26.12). Richards anchored the 4 x 100-meter relay team which has not been defeated. The team was made up of Richards, Madison Zimbrich, McKenna Schuster and Riley Sammon. They were clocked in 52.46, a season-best, which was more than three seconds in front of the runner-up for Hayfield.

Josie Volkmann continues her outstanding season in the distance events, winning the 1,600-meter run by 20 seconds (5:52.02) and placing second in the 800-meter run (2:42.78).
