Dr. Waldschmidt, healthcare workers named grand marshals

Retired family physician Dr. Marilyn Waldschmidt, who tended to the medical needs of local residents for 22 years, and local healthcare workers have been named the grand marshals of Waterville’s 2021 Bullhead Days celebration.

Waldschmidt retired from medical practice in April 2020 and was slated to be the grand marshal for the town’s 2020 celebration, but COVID cancelled the event.

This year, the Waterville Area Chamber of Commerce decided to honor Waldschmidt and all area healthcare workers who helped fight the COVID pandemic.

Ironically, Waldschmidt’s last days as Waterville’s lone doctor came as COVID’s devastation was just beginning.

“I telephoned with my last patients due to Coronavirus,” she stated. “It wasn’t the ending I had in mind, but it’s okay. You can’t do much about it, and I wanted everyone to be safe.”

Waldschmidt, an Iowa native, graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1995. Her rural resident assignment with Waseca and Mankato hospitals brought her to the southern Minnesota lakes region.

During that time, Waterville’s long-time doctor, Dr. Ralph Buesgens, who established a solo family practice clinic in Waterville in 1950, announced his plans for retirement.

In 1997, Buesgens officially retired and Waldschmidt began her practice in Buesgens’ Lake Street facility.
