Davis pin lifts Grizzlies over Razorbacks

The Section 2A Quarterfinal wrestling match between No. 4 seed WEM/ JWP and No. 5 seed Westfield came down to the final bout of the evening Thursday, Feb. 16.

Heavyweight Max Davis pinned Vincent Hernandez in 4:33 to give the Grizzlies a 40-38 win over Westfield and move them into the Section Semifinals Saturday, Feb. 18 at St. Clair.

No. 1 seed Medford ended the Grizzly season with a 59-24 win. They went on to claim the Section 2A Championship with a 33-30 win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.

Obviously the Davis win was a big one, but throughout the course of the match, there were others who put together great performances which allowed WEM/JWP to advance to the second day of the Section Team Tourney for the first time since 2015 when they were in Class AA.

The Grizzlies recorded five falls, received one forfeit, and had a major decision. But two of their losses were very key to saving points.

Brady Murphy (106) opened the match with a 38 seconds pin over Kaiden Chicos. Kelton Erler (145) recorded a fall over Kael Steele in 3:43. Isaac Quast recorded the quickest fall of the night, pinning Wyatt Magnuson in 30 seconds. Keegan Kuball (220) set up Davis’ heroic win with a pin of Brody Johnson in 1:15. Jack Cahill (182) received a forfeit.
