Walkoff grand slam stops Orioles’ win streak

A walkoff grand slam home run gave St. Patrick a 4-3 win and ended the New Prague Orioles’ 7-game winning streak Sunday, July 10, in Dakota-Rice-Scott League play.

With just 10 days left in the schedule before the playoffs begin, and with rainouts mounting, teams are scrambling to make sure they complete their schedule before the July 24 end of the season. New Market has clinched a Region 3C playoff birth, as they hold a three-game lead over and St. Patrick in the lleague standings.

Wednesday, July 6 Mallards 5, Bulldogs 3 Montgomery pitchers Trevor Smisek, Robbie Marshall and Jared Schloesser combined for a six-hitter as the Mallards defeated Union Hill 5-3 Wednesday, July 6. Smisek started and allowed one hit over five innings to earn the win. Ryan Iverson had three hits, including a double and a home run. He had four of the team’s five RBIs. Tom Flicek, Pat Lloyd and Aaron Dwyer had two hits each. Schloesser earned a save. Union Hill’s Dan Fenies took the loss.

Friday, July 8 Bulldogs 6, Warriors 5 Union Hill edged Veseli 6- 5 in Veseli. No information was available.

Saturday, July 9 Lakers 4, Saints 2 Faribault scored three runs in the sixth inning for a come-from-behind 4-2 win over St. Benedict Saturday, July 9. Matt Lane allowed just two runs in the first inning to pick up the win for Faribault. St. Benedict had two hits each from Mitchell Martin, Michael Pauly, Nick Heitkamp and Tanner Oakes. Matthias Duevel took the loss for the Saints.

Sunday, July 10 Irish 4, Orioles 3 With the New Prague Orioles on the verge of victory, St. Patrick’s Trevor Hentges launched a walkoff grand slam home run to right field, giving the Irish a 4-3 win and ending the Orioles’ 7-game winning streak. Derek Hahn started the late rally with a 1- out double. An error and a walk loaded the bases to set up Hentges’ heroics. Joel Zimmerman pitched well for New Prague, scattering seven hits, but would suffer the loss. Bill Dunker was the winning pitcher for St. Patrick, in relief of starter Seth Ambroz.

Lakers 9, Warriors 4 Faribault scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to claim a 9-4 come from behind win over Veseli in Faribault Sunday, July 10. No other information was available. Mallards 14, Sox 2 Jaron Christensen was the winning pitcher for Montgomery in a 14-2 win as the Sox lost their 50th consecutive DRS game in Webster Sunday. Jason Nelson took the loss.

Muskies 10, Bulldogs 0 New Market scored four runs in the first inning, then continued to pick away at Union Hill, winning a 10-0 game in eight innings. Kyle Henkemeyer, Andy Henkemeyer and Harrison Ballantyne had three hits each for New Market. Andy Henkemeyer had two home runs and Nate Rost had one. Rost was also the winning pitcher, throwing seven shutout innings and allowing seven hits while striking out four. Derek Bergstrom pitched the eighth, allowing one hit. Eric Bisek had two hits for the Bulldogs, including a double. Dave Anderson started and took the loss, with Nathan Olson pitching in relief.

Coyotes 16, Saints 4 Shakopee blasted 20 hits in a 16-4 win over St. Benedict Sunday. Two Coyotes accounted for 12 of the team’s RBIs as Zak Hoffman went 5-for-6 with two homers and seven RBIs, while Alex Johnson went 4- for-5 with three homers and four RBIs. Alex Boys and Scott Bode also had three hits each and Tanner Graff had two. Cody Pamperin was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and striking out seven. Jeremy Heitkamp started and took the loss for St. Benedict. He and Johnny Dittman had two hits each, while Michael Pauly had three hits, including a home run and two RBIs.

Monday, July 11 Lakers 5, Coyotes 2 Joey Grote hit a two-run double in the top of the 10th inning to put Faribault on top as the Lakers defeated Shakopee 5-2 in Shakopee. No other information was available.
