Trojan girls 2nd at conference meet

The New Prague Trojan girls cross country team ran well on their home course Tuesday, Oct. 17, as they hosted the the Wright County Conference East Division meet.

The squad demonstrated the power of pack running, as Iris McCarthy, Sydney Siegle, Morgan Brandt, Kate Chromy, and Bethany Vasecka started the race with the leaders and stayed close throughout the race.

"McCarthy looked determined to stay with the front runners as she charged up the hills, placing seventh overall (20:44) and capturing All- Conference honors," Coach Shawn Brandt said. "Although it was easy to see Waconia would win the team competition, the Trojans were in a tight race with Orono for second. At about the two mile mark, Siegle started to pull away from the pack, but the other three would not fall far behind. Each earned Honorable Mention awards by placing 11th, 13th, 17th, and 18th respectively. Times were: Siegle, 21:04; Brandt 21:21; Chromy, 21:35 and Vasecka, 21:38.

After the scores were tallied, New Prague and Orono were tied with 66 points each. The tie-breaker came down to the sixth runner, with Elsie Hatlevig placing 28th, in 23:04, one place better than Orono’s sixth runner. Anna Holden was the Trojans’ seventh runner, finishing 39th. "Thanks to this great team effort, the girls accomplished one of the goals they set back in August, placing in the top two at conference," Brandt said. Team scores for the meet had....
