TCU looks to add swimming and gymnastics

Athletes at Tri-City United High School may have two more choices for high school sports next year: swimming and gymnastics.

High School Activities Director Jason Myhre discussed the two sports at the school board’s April 24 work session. Building on a student interest survey, Myhre held an informational meeting on Saturday, April 22 for parents and students to see where the interest was for both sports. He said close to a dozen students and parents came to support each sport.

Myhre said that girls swimming would likely be hosted at the district’s pool at TCU-Montgomery Middle School. The last time the pool hosted a team was the 2005 season with co-op between Montgomery-Lonsdale and New Prague High Schools. After that season, due to declining members from MLHS, New Prague continued to rent the pool for its own team.

He said he had also spoke with the Jordan School District about forming a co-op. He said Jordan had about 14 students interested in the fall sport, that combined with TCU’s approximate 10-12 swimmers would make up the team.

The board asked if the interested students were already involved in a fall sport. Myhre said the students were not involved in a fall sport, so swimmers wouldn’t take away from existing activities.
