Sweethearts for life

“They always wanted to be together.”

That is how Milo and Marian Tuma’s daughter, Melissa Voigt, describes her parents’ 66-plus year love story.
“They were always sweethearts,” Voigt said. “They cherished each other, loved their family and valued their friends.”

Montgomery residents Milo and Marian, each 90 years old, passed away within days of each other. Milo passed first, on Friday, October 20, 2017; Marian, missing the love of her life, passed four days later on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Their combined funeral was held on October 28.

Milo and Marian met when they were 18 years old. Like many romances at the time, theirs blossomed on the dance floor under the light and sounds of big band music. According to Marian’s sister, Wilma “Willie” Dalton, Milo and Marian’s courtship lasted six years. During that time, the two loved to dance and go to the movie house to watch Milo’s favorite kind of movie.

“Their first date was at Lexington, which at that time was a ballroom,” Willie said. “Dates were to dances at ballrooms in Montgomery, Lonsdale and New Prague. They also went to Western movies at the Montgomery Theatre.”

The U.S. Army drafted Milo in 1950. After he finished basic training, the couple married on April 10, 1951. Their longest time apart came a week after their wedding when Milo left for a year-long deployment to Korea. During that long year, the two exchanged love letters. Marian wrote to him every day and waited for his letters … and him. She trusted God and put their future in His hands.

“Mom told me that if dad would not have come home from the war, that she never would have remarried. He was the only one for her,” Melissa said. “Her faith was unwavering. She trusted God to bring dad home from Korea.”

The two were reunited April 1952, in Fort Carson, CO. After finishing school, Marian joined him for the last three months of his duty. The couple moved back to Minnesota and lived with her parents on the family farm in Lexington Township for a short time before her parents moved to Montgomery.
