Sunday sales at Wayside Liquor

Montgomery’s liquor store, along with other liquor stores around the state said goodbye to a century-old “blue law” on Sunday morning when Minnesotans are able to buy alcohol on Sunday.

After years of failed attempts, lawmakers voted to change the law prohibiting Sunday liquor sales this past session.
On Sunday morning, July 2, Wayside Liquor had a full parking lot of people waiting for the doors to open. Cathy Way Bintz, was working the cash register for the day’s hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. She said a lot of people were waiting for the doors to open because they wanted to be part of history and the novelty of moment.

“Everyone had to be here. They said they need to be here because it’s the first time of the new law and open Sundays,” Bintz said. “One lady came and she wanted the receipt to put in a scrapbook.”

Liquor store owners have the option of being open on Sunday, and Bintz said many owners are choosing that route because if they’re not open, business could go elsewhere.

“Chuck (one of Wayside owners) said it’s new now so people are going to come in, but you can hardly not be open on Sunday because people will go somewhere else.”
