Sabers, Tigers top Trojan girls

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team lost two tough games last week, dropping their record to 0-4 to start the season. The Trojans lost a tight contest to Shakopee and then lost to Section 1AAAA foe Farmington.

New Prague was scheduled to face Lakeville North (No. 3, Class AAAA) on Tuesday, Dec. 5. They will play their first home game of the season Friday, Dec. 8, against Prior Lake, then travel the next morning to Minnetonka High School for a 9:30 a.m. game against Andover in the Breakdown Invitational. The Trojans host Bloomington Kennedy Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Sabers 51, Trojans 48 New Prague and Shakopee squared off in an evenly played basketball game that ended with the Sabers taking a 51-48 win in Shakopee’s new gym.

The score was close throughout the evening, with neither team holding more than a five-point lead.

“Shakopee graduated their entire lineup, but they have some good players and it looked like they didn’t miss a beat,” Coach Luke Swedberg said. “It was a highly competitive, back-and-forth contest.”

The score was tied 25-25 at halftime and remained close throughout the second half.

“We played a lot better on defense than in our first two games,” Swedberg said. “We’re seeing improvement in increments. That is one of the things we’re focusing on, to steadily improve.”
