Roy Fred Washa, 92
Roy Fred Washa, 92, of Montgomery died August 11, 2017, at his home in Montgomery MN.
Roy was born to Fred and Bessie (Rynda) Washa on May 22, 1925. He attended St. Raphael School and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1943. He played basketball in High School and was a strong supporter of the Redbirds. He continued to follow sports - Redbirds, Gophers, and the Twins. He also worked at the Montgomery Brewery during high school and before he entered service.
Roy was a World War II Navy Veteran. He entered service on August 18, 1943. He served in the engineering room on the aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged March 20, 1946. Roy was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Roy married Julie Nohava at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lonsdale on October 19, 1948. Together they raised their six sons.
He was in partnership in Washa’s Department Store with his two brothers. He sold out his share to his brothers and went into the painting business for himself. He was proud of his work and continued in the painting business for over 40 years.
He was King of his castle and his home was the headquarters for most holidays. He lived and died in the same home he owned. He was always kind and a quiet individual. He was a lifetime member of the Holy Redeemer Church which was the bedrock of his life.
He was preceded in death by parents: Fred and Bessie Washa, an infant son John, son William “Bill”, and brother Frank.
Roy is survived by his wife of 68 years: Julia “Julie”; Sons: Bob (JoAnn), Roy Jr, Joe (Kim), Jim, and Steve (Jean); Grandson: Michael (Megan), Great Granddaughters: Clara, Julianna, brother Fred (Eunice), nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the Most Holy Redeemer Church in Montgomery and interment at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Father Victor Valencia officiated at the services. Military honors were conducted at services and interment.
Arrangements were entrusted to son Steve, Funeral Director, at Washburn McReavy Funeral Chapel.
