Residents question council on law enforcement issues

The Montgomery City Council worked through a lengthy agenda Monday night without difficulty, with the most excitement of the evening coming at the end of the meeting, when some of the people among the large crowd said they had questions to ask.

However, that was not going to happen at that time.

“We will not take questions or comments now, since there was time for public comment at the beginning of the meeting,” said Mayor John Grimm.

Grimm did allow Tom Eisert to approach, when he said he had important information to share concerning the law enforcement budget.

Eisert said there are incorrect numbers being put out there that are confusing and misleading to the public.
“The public needs to know the correct figures, comparing apples to apples, with an itemized breakdown, when considering law enforcement budgets,” Eisert said.

City Administrator Brian Heck said the numbers are correct, but he would be able to compile a breakdown of police department costs for 2015 and 2016 if needed.

As that discussion ended, a couple in the audience said they had traffic complaints in their residential area (Deer Trail), and wanted to question the sheriff in that regard, but he was already gone from the meeting.

Once again, Mayor Grimm said those complaints should have been expressed during the public comment period or when the sheriff was present. They were advised to contact the sheriff’s office in Le Center or Brian Heck at the city office who may be able to answer their questions.
