Panthers power past Trojans
The New Prague Trojan wrestling team started its 2017-18 season Thursday, Nov. 30, with a 45-13 loss to a powerful Scott West team.
The Panthers are rated No. 2 in Class AA and have five state-ranked wrestlers in their lineup, along with several other strong contenders. The young Trojan squad, with three state ranked wrestlers of their own and listed as “Lean and Mean” in the Class AAA poll, did not match up well against their in-county rivals.
Things started out well for New Prague when freshman Nick Novak jumped to a big first period lead at 106 pounds before scoring a fall in 3:02. Colby Dunkel, a state qualifier last year, followed with a 10-8 decision at 113 pounds to put New Prague up 9-0.
But the next six matches went to Scott West, with four of those featuring ranked wrestlers. There were some good efforts from the Trojans, including Taylor Woodyard holding his own in a 12- 4 loss to No. 2-ranked Jackson Stauffacher at 132 and Colton Bornholdt losing a tough 3-0 decision to Justin Stauffacher at 138.
