Overtime win advances Titans

Titan Devon Jacobson had 25 points and went 11-of-11 from the free throw line as the Tri-City United Titan boys basketball team upset No. 2 seed Sibley East 78-75 in overtime Monday, March 6, in Gaylord in the first round of the Section 2AA playoffs.
 
The Titans trailed for most of the game, by as many as 15 points, but took their first lead of the game with 4:30 left in regulation. The Titans had a five-point lead with 48 seconds left, but the Wolverines hit a three-pointer, forced a turnover and hit a 15-foot jumper to tie it with 34 seconds left. Both teams missed opportunities to win in the final seconds.
 
The Titans never trailed in the extra session and took the lead for good at 74-72 on a 15-footer by Jacobson with 2:00 left. Jacobson and Brad Davis each made a pair of free throws down the stretch. Sibley East had the ball and went for a last shot, but was called for traveling with 1.7 seconds left.
 
TCU turned the ball over on the in-bounds and Sibley East had a last-second shot to tie fall short.
 
The Titans won the game at the free throw line, making 25 of 29 for the game. They trailed by as many as 15 points, committing 13 turnovers in the first half, but regrouped in the second half, turning it over just five times. Four Titans scored in double figures. Besides Jacobson’s 25, Zach Sexe had 19, Kyle Hintz had 13 and Davis 10.
 
The Titans will face Glencoe-Silver Lake, the No. 3 seed, at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in New Prague. No. 1 seed Jordan faces No. 5 Belle Plaine in the first game at 6 p.m.
 
Thursday’s winners play in the section semifinals Monday, March 13, at MSU-Mankato.
