Orioles advance to semifinals

New Prague defeated Jordan 4-0 Sunday in the state Class C Baseball Quarterfinals. Joel Zimmerman and draftee Matt Perkinson of Veseli threw a combined 7-hit shutout, with Zimmerman getting the win and Perkinson the save. 

 

The Orioles scored one in the first inning, one in the fourth and two in the sixth. Andy Kes had two hits and two RBIs and Eric Wagner added a pair of hits. New Prague will face Lake Henry Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m in Hamburg in the semifinals. The winner advances to the state championship game at 3 p.m. Monday in Green Isle. 

 

Also in the quarterfinals Union Hill lost to Bemidji 2-0. The Blue Ox scored single runs in the third and eighth innings for the win. Union Hill had plenty of chances, with two batters on base in five different innings, but couldn’t get the timely hit. Derek Masberg was tagged with the loss, despite allowing just six hits and one earned run in nine innings of work. 

 

The other DRS team in the tournament, Faribault, gave up a run in the eighth inning and lost to Lake Henry 3-2. Glake Langerud had two of Faribault’s five hit sand both RBIS. Ryan Archambaul also had two hits. Egan Bonde was tagged took the loss, with Bill Dunker, draftee from St. Patrick, pitching in relief. 

 

Both semifinal games will be played in Hamburg Sunday. Kimball takes on Bemidji at 5 p.m., followed by New Prague vs. Lake Henry at 7:30 p.m.
