New Cancer Support Group meets Jan. 2 People are welcome to join a new Cancer Support Group forming in the community on Tuesday, Jan. 2. People can come share their experiences and learn more about coping with the challenges of cancer. Family and friends are welcome to attend. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague, 301 Second St. NE in the Solarium Conference Room. New Prague VFW Post 5145 meets Jan. 4 New Prague VFW Post 5145 will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Park Ballroom clubroom, 300 Lexington Ave. S at 7:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at 7 p.m. All veterans are welcome. Voice of Democracy winners are first place Selah Uplegger $50, second place Abby Tostenson $40 and third place Payton Peterson $30.

Archaeology Night at the Museum set The Scott County Historical Society will be holding an Archaeology Night at the Museum, where people can become an “Indiana Jones.” Archaeologist Steven Blondo will talk about the alpha site project and its progress, and hopes to recruit would-be-archaeologists to help with research (library and on the ground). Find out what “alpha sites” are, why they need to be researched, and how you can help. Please join the society from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Scott County Historical Society. NAMI Scott Co. offers 12-week course Does a loved one live with a mental illness? NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Scott County is offering a free 12 week class for family members and friends of individuals with a mental illness taught by trained family members. The class starts 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Glendale United Methodist Church, 13550 Glendale Rd. Savage. Families gain insight and information to empower and support themselves and their loved one. Learn current information on major mental illnesses, medications, and side effects, build empathy, coping skills, problem solving, communication techniques and understand how to locate support and services in the community.
