Masopust: Goodbye meat, Hello Lent
Masopust, which signals the beginning of fasting for 40 days, came relatively early this year.
The Czech variation on the pre-Lent festival, which roughly means “meat fast”, was celebrated on February 13 in Montgomery, as Tuesday was a work day for most people.
Before the start of Lent, people in the Czech Republic celebrate the festival with days-long masquerading and merry-making. In Montgomery, organizers threw its 18th annual, scaled back, one-day version that attracted more than 200 people to the American Legion Club.
