Kids Company cares for police

Students from Kids Company at New Prague Area Schools had their own Pay It Forward program last week as they provided a care package to New Prague Police on Wednesday, July 20. The package included cards made by the students, treats for police officers and poem.

While the presentation was made at Raven Stream Elementary School, the 25 students were from that school and Falcon Ridge Elementary. The mixture of third through fifth graders cited several reasons for why they were doing a Pay It Forward. It was a way to do something kind, police help people a lot, they keep people safe and protect people. The students said they worked as a team to make the care package, it was a way to make the world a better place and it was kind of fun.

Officer Dean Duban received the package for the police. He then answered a wide range of questions from students. For how long he’s been an officer, he said since 1983 he’s been keeping people safe. To a question of what is in his car, he replied there were medical supplies, tools such as an extraction device and fire extinguishers. He was asked what he had on his belt, which included a taser, a radio, pepper mace, handcuffs and his gun. A student asked if New Prague has a K-9, Duban said they did at one time, now they have a K- 9 brought in when they need to find someone. When asked what does he like about his job, he said, “This kind of stuff or when the end of a call is a happy ending,” He added about the care package, “Thank you so much, this means a lot.”
