Joyce Carol (Tuma) Christen, 74

Joyce Carol (Tuma) Christen, 74. 10/23/43 - 03/04/18.

Joyce was wrapped in the Lords Loving Arms on March 4th, at Our Lady of Peace Hospice.
Joyce Carol Tuma was born of Bessie Eve (Simon) (deceased) & John William Tuma (deceased). She was the youngest of their children & the only one not born on the Family Farm in New Prague, MN. Also preceded in death by her Brother John L Tuma, Sister Grace Miller, Brother-in-law Jim LaPitz, Niece Shelly Tuma and longtime partner of 30 years, Eugene D. Kilmer.
She is survived by son Jon Henri Christen, wife Heather, Grandson William, Sister Mary LaPitz, Sister-in-law Franny Tuma, Brother -in-law Gene Miller, Nephew Jeff Tuma & Great Niece Samantha Tuma, as well as many great friends.
Joyce received her Master’s Degree from University of Minnesota in Social Work. She had a career of over 40+ years in Social Work, ending at HealthEast Bethesda Hospital in 2013. She loved Social Work with all her heart and soul.
Joyce was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in October 2007 and fought it bravely & gracefully to the very end. Her energy to fight came from playing LEGO’s with her Grandson William and spending time with him. William always brought a smile to her face, even while Joyce was going through chemotherapy and in the hospice.
Joyce enjoyed going out to lunch, traveling, going to church at St. Joan of Arc, tending to her plants (especially her violets), and caring for numerous cats she owned over the years.
Joyce was a kind gentle soul. She would never complain and was always willing to help out. When describing Joyce, people would always say she is such a warm, loving, and kind person.
Memorials given to Joyce’s family will be donated to Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St Paul. They were such a loving calm place for Joyce to spend her final days. They provided her family & friends a comfortable place to visit, while giving her family and friends the gift of laughing, talking, and nurturing, while leaving the rest to them.
Burial will be in spring at the Czech National Cemetery, 609 Main St W, New Prague, MN. If you would like to be notified of the specific date, please make sure Heather Christen has your contact information.
