Heavy rains close school, flood area

Heavy rains closed school and are causing havoc in the local area.

Due to the rising water in the river that runs near the WEM School building in Waterville, all WEM Schools were closed Thursday morning, Sept. 22. Many students were seen helping fill sandbags at the county/city shop in Waterville at 8:30 a.m.

Sand and sandbags are available at the City of Waterville / Le Sueur County Shop in Waterville. Residents must fill and haul their own bags.

Rainfall estimates ranged from 5” up to 10” in Waterville.

Le Sueur County Maintenance Supervisor Robbie Kopet was in Waterville Thursday morning to assess road conditions.

“So far, there are six areas closed off in this area, but I’m sure there will be more as the day goes on. I’ve been with the county for 26 years and there are a few areas going under that I’ve never seen before. But, we’re lucky compared to Waseca County. They have 42 road closures and are looking for more signs,” Kopet stated.

Emergency Management Director Ann Traxler wants to remind people to never drive thru water-covered roadways. “Turn around. Don’t drown,” she stated. Traxler also asks people to report roadways covered by water that are not barricaded by calling the county’s non-emergency dispatch at 507-357-4440.

Waterville Chamber's Hot Summer Night event scheduled for the evening of Sept. 22nd has been cancelled and will be held Thursday, Sept. 29.
