Four teams go to 2-0 in DRS play
Elko, New Market, Prior Lake and Shakopee each upped their record to 2-0 with wins in the second week of the Dakota-Rice-Scott Baseball League season Sunday, while Lonsdale, New Prague, Union Hill and Webster dropped to 0-2 on the season.
The Muskies got a win in the closest game of the day, taking a 4-2 decision over St. Patrick.
This week’s schedule features two games Wednesday, May 4, two non-league games on Friday, two games on Saturday and a full slate of six games on Sunday. St. Benedict sees its first action of the season as they host Montgomery at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Mudcats 13, Bulldogs 4 Union Hill jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Danny Beckius hit a one-out double, then Adam Gill singled and Eric Bisek walked. Beckius scored on a wild pitch and Adam Giesen hit a two-run double, then Jeff Dietz drove in Giesen with a single. That was all Prior Lake starter Ben Morrison would allow over six innings of work for the win. He allowed five hits as the Mudcats went on to a 13-4 win. The Mudcats scored four in the second on five walks, a hit batter, and a single by Jake Lehrer, chasing starter Hunter Piehl from the game. Dave Anderson relieved. The Mudcats added a run on an error, a walk, and a single by Justin Hackett. Two more runs came in the fourth on a Brad Schoenrock double. The Mudcats added one in the fifth on an RBI single by Jon Houston. Two more were plated in the sixth on a Cole Bjorge double. Levi Schneider capped the scoring with a two-run single in the seventh. Jake Lehrer, Jon Houston, and Justin Hackett threw one inning each. Beckius finished the final two innings for the Bulldogs. For Prior Lake, Schoenrock was 3-for-4 with a double, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Hackett was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Schneider had two hits and three RBIs, Bjorge had a double and two RBIs and Houston had two hits and an RBI. For the Bulldogs, Gill and Giesen had two hits each and Giesen had two RBIs.
Warriors 17, Sox 3 Veseli struck for four runs in the top of the first on their way to a 17-3 win over Webster. Eric Steinhoff’s double and Ben Doerr’s RBI single were the big hits. Nate Nielsen had an RBI single in the bottom of the first for the Sox, scoring Jason Nelson. Veseli added two in the fourth, six more in the fifth and two in the sixth and seventh innings. Matt Perkinson had a pair of hits and Nolan Hodapp and Nate Novak doubled. Brett Kriha scored five times for the Warriors. Blake Radloff scattered five Webster hits over five innings getting the win. Jack Meyer pitched two scoreless innings for Veseli. Alex Fischer took the loss for Webster.
Muskies 4, Irish 2 Nate Rost went eight innings to pick up the win as New Market defeated St. Patrick 4-2. Rost scattered eight hits while striking out eight. Zach Seurer took the loss for St. Patrick, going four innings and yielding three runs. Derek Bergstrom picked up the save for New Market. At the plate, Rost delivered the decisive hit with a threerun homer to left in the fifth. Seth Ambroz led the Irish with three hits, all singles. The Muskies only had five hits, but walked 11 times.
Express 8, Aces 3 Lonsdale and Elko played a clean game with neither team committing any errors, with the Express taking an 8- 3 win. Elko’s Tyler Brekke started slow, walking the first three batters he faced before settling down to allow only one of the three to score on his way to five solid innings. Elko capitalized on free passes themselves scoring their first three runs of the game by reaching on two walks and a hit batter. The sixth inning saw the Aces briefly tie the game at 3-3 by netting three hits and coaxing two walks. The Express answered with two runs of their own to recapture the lead on a hit by Ash Larsen and bases loaded walk by Nick Kulla. The Express added three insurance runs in the eighth before Thomas closed out the game with 3 strikeouts on 10 pitches. For Elko, Gordon Kappers had a double, two walks and was hit by a pitch. He scored three runs. TJ Evanson and Larsen had two hits each. Brekke pitched five innings and allowed two hits and one earned run, striking out three to get the win. For Lonsdale, Anderson went 3-for-3 with two RBIS, Mike Robohm took the loss, going six innings and allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out eight.
Coyotes 9, Orioles 3 Shakopee got the jump on the Orioles, scoring twice in the first and four times in the second off starter Dusty Beckius. It was 7-0 when the Orioles scored in the bottom of the third. Eric Wagner walked, went to third when a pickoff throw by the catcher went into right field and scored on a wild pitch. The Orioles got another run in the fourth when the Coyotes walked the bases full and scored on a wild pitch. For Shakopee, Logan Becker went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Alex Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Matt Theis and Dylan Pass both had two hits. Johnson started and went four innings to get the win, allowing two hits and striking out six. Tyler Sloss pitched the final five innings, allowing one run. For New Prague, Wagner and Zac Dubanoski had two hits each. Beckius took the loss, allowing 10 hits in two innings, with Joel Zimmerman pitching six innings and allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out four. Aaron Kes pitched the final inning for the Orioles.
