Council flip-flops on goodwill

When it comes to giving residents a break on penalties, the Montgomery City Council flip-flopped at its regular meeting on Monday.

An addition to the agenda, the council heard from Jean Braat who owns several properties in Montgomery. The City had revoked the rental license for her property on the 100 block of Third Street after renters had been evicted due to illegal drug use that was discovered by the Cannon River Drug & Violent Offender Task Force.

Braat said she and her husband own seven rental properties in Montgomery and have been operating rentals for the past 15 years. She said they have never had a problem or any violations with the city and asked to have the $500 reinstatement penalty waived.

The council discussed the issue, with Mayor John Grimm being sympathetic, saying he has also rented properties and added sometimes what renters do are out of the owners’ control.
