Boys hockey tops Hopkins, falls to So St. Paul, Eagan

The New Prague Trojans won one and lost two to take fourth place at the South St. Paul Premier boys hockey tournament last week. New Prague defeated Hopkins and lost to South St. Paul and Eagan.

The Trojans (6-3-2) return to action Friday, Jan. 5, when they travel to Waconia. New Prague hosts Delano/Rockford at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Trojans 4, Royals 3 New Prague opened a big lead with three goals in less than two minutes midway through the first period, then held on for a 4-3 win over Hopkins in the opening round of the tournament.

Phil El-Wailli got New Prague on the board with a goal at 6:33. Luke Witt assisted.

Twenty-seven seconds later, at 7:00, Jack Kreutzian put the Trojans up 2-0. Jon Von Bank and Jake Lee assisted.

Witt made it 3-0 with a goal at 8:31, with Blake Woodson getting an assist.

New Prague struck again early in the second period, with Garret Runyon making it a 4-0 game just 48 seconds in. Jake Pirkl and Blake Woodson had assists.

But Hopkins didn’t roll over and die. The Royals got on the board with a goal at 4:13 and made it 4-2 with a goal with just seven seconds left in the second period.

The Royals controlled the action in the third period, keeping pressure on Trojan goaltender Colin Dorzinski. They outshot New Prague 10-3 in the final 17 minutes, but only managed one goal, at 11:21, on a power play.

The Royals outshot the Trojans 23-21 for the game. Dorzinski stopped 20 of 23 shots to get the win.

Packers 5, Trojans 1 New Prague and South St. Paul played two even periods in the semifinal round at Doug Woog Arena, but the host team took control in the third and claimed a 5-1 win.
