Boys finish 7th at TCU

The New Prague Trojan boys cross country team returned to action Thursday, Sept. 7, with a strong showing at the Gerry Smith Invitational at Montgomery National Golf Course.

The event, billed as the largest in southern Minnesota, featured 29 teams. New Prague captured seventh in the varsity competition and third for JV. On the day, the team set 11 new personal records and all athletes returning from 2015 (the last time the meet was held due to a cancellation last year) showed significant improvement. As a team, the Trojans took a step forward from one week ago at St. Olaf.

Mankato Loyola/Cleveland took first place honors. 

“The coaches are proud of our team's hard work and improvement,” Coach Nick Meyer said.

In the varsity race, Hayden DeGross competed with a number of elite athletes, crossing the line in 11th place in 17 minutes, 22 seconds, good for a medal and a trip to the awards ceremony. Noah Weichert (39th, 18:22), Ryker Huseby (48th, 18:34), and Liam Fife (49th, 18:35) crossed in tight formation with Aiden Dorzinski (69th, 19:08) rounding out the scoring five. DeGross, Fife, and Grant Schaap (72nd, 19:11) all set PRs and all returning runners improved signifcantly over 2015. The Trojans’ seventh varsity runner was Joe DeJong (94th, 19:41).

“Our guys clearly came prepared to race intelligently and with passion,” Meyer said. “Strong pack dyanmics worked well for the Trojans.”
